Welcome back to another September edition of Artisan Wednesday Wow. Hard to believe another week has flown by and we get to share another project with you already! Time is not slowing down, in fact it seems to be going by at lightning speed. Kids are back to school, leaves are falling from the trees and with that we are definitely back into the full swing of Fall activities. Before we know it, Halloween will be here! Many of us (or at least a couple) on the Artisan Design Team will have Halloween projects to share so if you’re a Halloween Fanatic be sure to hop on all the way through all of the Artisan’s and be sure to check out the Stampin’ Up! Facebook page this Friday! .. just a little hint at what’s in store! .. and I can’t wait to see it all myself!
For now though, I do have a Halloween project to share with you today! I have had this one brewing in my head for awhile.. I had other ideas on how I was going to pull it off, but then Erica Cerwin shared her fabulous page in last week’s Artisan Blog Hop and that altered my course of crafting! Thanks Erica! This one does involve a little bit of ink and MDS and paper, but no stamping! I can’t wait to put this piece up with our Halloween Decor this fall.
There are so many things you can do with scraps of wood in crafting and I’ve wanted to give it a whirl for a while now. There are many 2 x 4 ideas all over the web but what we had here were pieces of 1 x 4 from the little fence we built in front of our house so I used those. *Update: I was wrong! EEK.. those strips of wood came from a pallet that we pulled apart to create something else with… so, if you have any shops near you that put their pallets outside for people to recycle, grab one, then most of your supplies to build are free! I knew that crafting a pumpkin out of wood scraps would go great with the Celebrate verse from the Halloween Bash Digital Download. The Digital Download enabled me to use my Silhouette and cut a stencil so that I could paint the verse onto the Pumpkin. Erica generously shared a video on how to achieve this, check it out here. Much thanks to Erica again, she’s pretty fabulous! I used a Window Sheet and fit the verse to almost the size of the 12 x 12 sheet (heigh wise) and cut the verse out of that to use as a stencil. I then built the pumpkin to fit the verse.
As I mentioned, I used Erica’s technique of mixing Basic Black re-inker with some spackle and I painted that on through the stencil and then coated it with the Black Stampin’ Glitter found in the Holiday Catalogue. I was going to try doing sections at a time with versamark, heat and stick and then the glitter.. not sure if it will work but if a download comes out for Halloween Hello, I’ll be creating a Candy Corn out of wood scraps to go with the pumpkin and will put ‘it’s all about the candy’ on the candy corn.. I actually had intentions to do a set of projects for you today but to my dismay, there was no download for Halloween Hello.. hint, hint SU! To ‘set’ the glitter in hopes of keeping it from rubbing off of the pumpkin, I spray set it with a fixative spray… hope it does the charm! The glitter was hard to capture but maybe you can get more of a hint of it here.
I did mention that I used some ink. Aside from the Basick Black re-inker, I wanted the pumpkin to look a little weathered, so I used the Sanding System to sand down some areas and then applied some soft suede ink to the worn areas with a Stamping Sponge.. for those of you who know my stamping style… it should come as no surprise that I even sponge on painted wood projects! <wink> It was one of my favorite parts of this project!
I do love Halloween Projects and whether they’ve come up with something Halloween or otherwise, I’m really looking forward to hopping through the projects this week! I’ve been busy with lots of projects including getting ready for a fundraiser that I am running tonight in support of Alzheimers and haven’t had much time to get online to check out what people are up to creating. If you missed out on tonight’s fundraiser, I may offer it again one last time. Either way, be sure to hop through yourself. Becky is next and if you just started here, don’t stop until you get to Mercedes!
